A little bit about me: I am a board-certified Surgical Physicians Assistant, and have been working as such for the past 16 years. I have extensive experience in vascular, cardiothoracic, and plastic surgery. My goal is to meet every client’s unique hopes and needs, not only in terms of appearance, but also in terms of an overall sense of wellbeing. I want you to feel beautiful inside and out,

Your 6-Tip SPF Refresher

At this point in the summer, you’ve probably gotten a pretty good base tan, the novelty of the pool or beach may be wearing off a bit, and you may already be counting the days until school starts again. By mid-summer, it’s tempting to become a little lax about your SPF application. But don’t do it! Now is the time to be more vigilant than ever. So here’s a little SPF refresher to keep you motivated and keep your skin beautiful.

1. Apply sunscreen correctly, and reapply religiously, every day. According to the skin cancer experts at one of our favorite brands — SkinCeuticals — studies have shown that more than half of sunscreen users do NOT apply the dermatologist-recommended amount to properly protect skin from sun damage. In order to stay adequately protected, it is important that all exposed areas of skin are covered by a generous layer of sunscreen. As a general rule of thumb, a nickel-sized amount should be applied to the face and a shot glass amount should be applied to the body. It is also important to remember that no matter how much sunscreen you apply, it should be reapplied every 2 hours, especially when spending an extended amount of time outdoors. Reapply more frequently if swimming or sweating. See the Skinceuticals video below for more on application technique.

Long breaks in shade are imperative.

We continue to work tirelessly and go above and beyond current guidelines recommended by state health authorities to create a safe, relaxing experience for you. After all, now more than ever, managing stress and seeking a trusted, safe and nurturing environment is vital to our overall well-being. Below is a quick summary of our updated safety commitments to clients and staff alike, followed by a more detailed outline of specific changes to our facility and our new protocols. A SUMMARY OF OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

* HAVEN’S FACILITY CHANGES:

Installation of Nu-Calgon Bi-polar Ionization Air Filtration System: We’ve installed this system on all three floors of our spa to possibly help reduce exposure to the corona virus. Click here to learn more.

Professional Deep Cleaning: Prior to re-opening, we have had a professional service disinfect the facility from top to bottom.

Daily Cleanings with Clean Republic Disinfectant: We are proud to use this non-toxic, effective, nature-derived brand of cleaners that are effective against COVID without harsh chemicals or toxic fumes. We continually clean surfaces throughout the day, especially in service rooms between each client visit.

New Plexiglass Barriers Installed: In our reception area and nail boutique you’ll notice the addition of plexiglass barriers to help better protect our clients and staff.

Removal of Superfluous Items from Our Space: We have removed extra fabric, magazines and other miscellaneous items throughout space to reduce opportunities for contact transmission.

Clear Signage: We have posted clear reminders of our guidelines throughout the spa. We kindly ask that you respect and follow our new guidelines for your own safety as well as the safety of other clients’ and our staff.

* HAVEN’S PROCEDURAL CHANGES:

Wellness Screenings: Prior to your arrival for a service, we ask that you fill out our Online Screening Form here . If you arrive without having filled it out, we will ask you to fill out a hard-copy before entering our spa.

Front Porch Check-in: Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment and text us at 845-876-7369 so we can have someone ready to greet you. We will text you when it’s time to check-in on the front porch. It may take a moment, so please dress accordingly.

Temperature Screenings: Upon arrival, we will take everyone’s — both clients’ and staff’s — temperature with touchless thermometers outside of our main facility.

Face Masks: Staff and clients are required by law to wear masks and other protective equipment in order to protect staff and guest. We ask that you bring and wear an effective mask that covers your mouth and nose. If not, one will be provided for you.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Appropriate PPE will be worn by all employees based on their role and responsibilities and in adherence with state and local regulations and guidance.

Please Limit the Belongings You Bring Inside: Please enter with only your keys and/or phone. While personal beverages are not allowed inside, hot tea and water are served on our front porch.

Social Distancing: We have limited seating and reduced our maximum occupancy to help staff and clients practice physical distancing in non-treatment spaces. Guests are advised to stand at least six feet away from others in a group. Employees will be reminded to practice physical distancing by standing at least six feet away from guests and other employees whenever possible.

Payment: While we are accepting cash and credit card transactions, treatments and gratuity can be paid for via touchless transactions if preferred.

Hand Sanitizing: Hand-sanitizing dispensers will be placed at key guest and employee entrances and contact areas for easy access.

Services Offered: We are offering all our original services, per New York State’s guidance.

COVID-19 Training: All employees have been trained on COVID-19 safety and sanitation protocols with even more comprehensive training for our team members who have more frequent guest contact.

Haven@Home:Nail Care Part 3 –Pedicure Tutorial

Our wonderful nail technician Kelly Ann is back again you show how to replicate a Haven Signature Pedicure at home.

Step 1: Add oil to your cuticles (apply with a paper towel). You can use purpose-made cuticle oil, or any oil you have handy, including coconut or even olive oil!

Step 2: Gently sand down calluses. If you don’t have a callus remover tool, a fine nail file will do.

Step 3: Use a foot scrub all over your foot, then rinse off in the tub. You can make your own with equal parts oil and white sugar.

Step 4: Moisturize with a thick lotion all over.

Step 5: Gently push back cuticles with a cuticle pusher or an orange wood stick.

Step 6: Prepare the nail for polish by cleaning and dehydrating the nail with rubbing alcohol or nail cleanser (Kelly Ann prefers rubbing alcohol).

Step 7: Clip and shape your nails.

Step 8: Lace a separator between your toes — a rolled-up tissue will do.

Step 9: Apply one layer of clear base coat to the entire nail, making sure to get the edges too.

Step 9: Add a layer of color polish, leaving a little space between the polish and skin – that helps it look neater and last longer. Clean up with a Q-tip as you go.

Step 10: Once the first coat is fully dry, add a second coat of color.

Step 11: Once the second coat is fully dry, ad a layer of clear top coat, making sure to seal the edges.

Step 13: Let your nails dry for a full 30 minutes before you put shoes on.

Haven@Home:Nail Care Part 2 –Manicure Tutorial

Our wonderful nail technician Kelly Ann shows you exactly how to recreate a Haven Signature Manicure at home.

Step 1: Add oil to your cuticles and massage in gently. You can use purpose-made cuticle oil, or any oil you have handy, including olive oil!

Step 2: While the cuticle oil soaks in, file your nails to your desired shape with the fine side of an emery board.

Step 3: Gently smooth the edges of your nail at an angle with a buffer or the fine side of an emery board. You can buffer the top of the nail too if you’d like, just be sure to be very gentle — you don’t want to over-buff.

Step 4: Gently push back cuticles with a cuticle pusher or an orange wood stick. Though it’s tricky and a little risky, you can trim any excess skin very delicately with small cosmetic scissors or cuticle nippers — but please use restraint.

Step 5: Clean under nails with cuticle pusher and then remove any excess oil with a cotton pad, a cotton ball, or a tissue.

Step 6: Prepare the nail for polish by cleaning and dehydrating the nail with rubbing alcohol or nail cleanser (Kelly Ann prefers rubbing alcohol).

Step 7: Apply one layer of clear base coat to the entire nail, making sure to get the edges too.

Step 8: Add a layer of color polish, leaving a little space between the polish and skin – that helps it look neater and last longer.

Step 9: Use the cuticle pusher to remove any polish that gets on skin as you go — wiping off on a nearby paper towel.Don’t use too much polish — you want a thin and even coat.

Step 10: Allow each coat to fully dry before moving on to the next coat. The nail polish you have at home may not dry as quickly as Haven Spa polish dries, so take your time — watch a movie or listen to a podcast and relax in between coats!
Step 11: Once the first coat is fully dry, add a second coat of color.

Step 12: Once the second coat is fully dry, ad a generous layer of clear top coat, making sure to seal the edges.

Step 13: Let your nails dry for a full 30 minutes — 15 minutes at a minimum — before you go about your day.

Haven@Home: Nail Care Part 1

Now that you can’t enjoy regular professional manicures during this time of social distancing, it’s important to maintain the health and integrity of your nails at home on your own. Here are some insider tips from our top nail technicians.

CUTICLES:

Keeping your cuticles hydrated is the most important way to keep them soft, prevent overgrowth, and prevent hang nails. Applying oil at least once a day works wonders on preserving nail and cuticle health overall. Many of our nail technicians recommend putting on hand lotion topped off with cuticle oil every night before bed. Cuticle oil works really well, but you can definitely use other kinds of oils too! We recommend coconut oil or olive oil. Typically the thicker the oil the better. Hair conditioner can also work well in a pinch!

NAIL SHAPE:

Lightly filing your nails once a week is a good way to preserve the shape and prevent breaking. The most manageable shape is short and rounded. When they’re short they’re less likely to break, and round is usually an easier shape to achieve. Try to keep the edges and sides of your nail smooth to further prevent breaking.

MAINTAINING RIDGES:

If you usually like to have your ridges smoothed out, lightly go over the entire nail with a buffer about once every other week. Using a buffer is the best option, but if you do not have a buffer, very gently go over the entire nail with the softest file you have. Don’t overdo it though! Keeping the nail and cuticle hydrated is very important to preventing splitting. Applying a clear coat or nail strengthener once a week is a great way to protect the nail and give it strength.

NAIL HEALTH:

Since most people are home, right now is the perfect time to give your nails a break from polish. It’s important to let the nail breath and allow all the lotions and oils to fully absorb into the nail. If you are finding the polish remover you have at home is not removing your polish, you may need to use pure acetone (available at stores like CVS, which offers online shopping and drive-through windows for safer delivery or pickup).

We miss you!

As a small local business, we are a family here at Haven Spa — that includes our wonderful clients and our fabulous talented staff, all of whom we’re so grateful for. We’re dedicated to putting our family’s health and wellbeing at the forefront. After all, that’s our founding principle here at Haven.

So after being open continuously for almost twenty years now, we made the difficult decision (prior to the mandate) to temporarily close Haven Spa for several weeks to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 . This is obviously a fluid situation, one we are monitoring closely. We will adjust our plans and timeline accordingly, based on the recommendations from our government and the CDC.

We plan to reopen as soon as possible — hopefully in June. Rest assured that we will be taking all necessary precautions and our entire facility will be cleaned and disinfected during the closure.

How can we all stay connected during this challenging time? We at Haven Spa will continue to bring peace and serenity into your lives, at a time when it’s needed more than ever. Here’s what we have planned:

5 Essential Steps to Prepare Your Skin for Fall

The beginning of fall marks the time of year when we reassess our beauty routines, focusing on skin repair and renewal to make sure our recently sun-kissed faces are still radiant come the colder months. Yes, we love summer but soaking up the sunshine and chlorine can wreak havoc on our skin. And as the warm weather wanes, the damage begins to show on our complexion, be it dryness, age spots, collagen loss, or increased lines and wrinkles. So here are five tips to keep your complexion smooth, bright and beautiful in the cooler days ahead.

1. SMOOTH SKIN REQUIRES EXFOLIATION

Letting go of summer means letting go of the last remnants of our bronzed skin. This is a good time to get a professional facial to remove sun damaged pigmentation, uneven skin tone and discoloration caused by fading tans. Let’s not forget the layers of dead skin cells present on the epidermis from tanning that can clog pores and dull the overall appearance of your complexion. The most effective way to slough off the summer buildup of dead skin is with advanced treatments like microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, or pharmaceutical-grade TCA peels designed to leave skin looking refreshed and beautifully luminous. To maintain a healthy glow and continue to promote cell turnover, use an at-home cleanser brush daily with a moisturizing cleanser.

2. SWITCH UP SUNSCREEN

Just because our moments basking in the sunshine are numbered, doesn’t mean we should slack on sun protection. With dryer weather on the way, there is less moisture in the air for our skin to absorb, which is why switching sunscreens to accommodate the change of weather is important: move from sheer light formulas to sunscreens that contain moisturizing ingredients. And remember: be consistent with applying it!

3. REPLENISH COLD WEATHER SKINCARE

As with our sunscreen, fall is when we say goodbye to our light moisturizers and reach for a richer, more luxurious formula to restore moisture that is lost due to dry air and colder temps. To keep dry skin at bay, add deeper, ultra-rich moisturizing products that are nourishing with humectants, such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, to bind moisture to the skin. Occlusive emollients such as organic avocado oil form a physical seal or barrier on the outer layer of the skin to lock in the moisture. Be sure to apply moisturizer to skin that is moist, either by using a fragrant, hydrating face mist or directly after you wash your face or shower.

4. DON’T FORGET THE FACE WASH

Adjusting a skincare routine to gracefully shift from summer to fall means understanding that as the weather grows cold, so does our need for thicker, richer cleansers. Your skin begins to produce less sebum in the colder months which leads to less grease on your face. During the summer months, chances are you’ve been using a cleanser that does away with that extra greasiness. Now, switching to a gentler, more moisturizing daily cleanser will help retain hydration. That might mean exchanging a foam cleanser for a creamy formula which nourishes the skin instead of cleansing away the moisture it needs.

5. PROTECT THE AREA AROUND YOUR EYES

Dry skin under the eye can suddenly become an issue as the moisture in the air disappears. When the pumpkin spice lattes come out, so do the fine lines and wrinkles. The skin around the eyes is especially fragile and fine so it needs special attention. Because the skin surrounding your eye is thinner — in fact the thinnest on your entire body, with moisture producing glands — a moisturizing cream specially formulated for the eyes used daily both morning and night is necessary to take good care of it and can make a noticeable difference. A heavier formula for night and a lighter one for day are must-have tools in the transition from moist, hot and humid days to drier fall weather.

Apply gently with a delicate, patting touch using your ring finger while making sure not to pull too hard on the delicate skin. Be careful not to get too close to your eyes and avoid applying directly to the eyelid. Allow your eye cream a minute or two to be absorbed before applying another product or make-up on top of it. Some Things to Keep in Mind About Scrubs

If you have healthy skin, you can use a scrub up to three times a week. If your skin is more sensitive, limit a good buffing to once a week. Be careful not to over scrub.

They enhance spa treatments, giving you the sense of being grounded and carried away at the same time. But they can also be used at home to recreate that relaxing or rejuvenating spa feeling every day.

Fill Your Senses

Scents are powerful! You can harness that power from each bottle of essential oil and transform your mood and even your day. Essential oils remind us of the bounty and gifts that come from Mother Nature, let us bask in the beautiful outdoors by filling our senses with the scents of summer fields, exotic locales, bountiful gardens. Elevate Your Bath

Set aside some time. Take a luxurious bath with salts that improve cleaning of the skin, treats skin irritation and inflammation, relaxes muscles and loosens stiff points, adding your favorite essential oil. Tip: don’t add essential oil directly to your bath water, first mix the essential oil to a “carrier” oil like coconut, jojoba, or olive oil. For a single bath add three to twelve drops, depending upon how strong you want the scent to one tablespoon of carrier oil and how sensitive your skin is. Your best skin-loving bet for a relaxing bath is an essential oil that promotes relaxation: Lavender, Camomille, or Rose.

Become a Beauty Buff

Set aside some time to incorporate essential oils into your beauty ritual. That can mean adding essential oil to your DIY mask. A clarifying clay mask to help with excess shine can be made with five simple ingredients plus water:

Mix all the ingredients together to form a thick paste. Add more or less water and aloe vera gel depending upon how you like the consistency. Tip: it should be thin enough to spread and thick enough to stay in place. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Rinse off, pat your face dry, then use your favorite moisturizer.

Make Your Mist More Meaningful

Add essential oil to your face mist or make your own! It’s easy. Fill a spray bottle ¼ of the way with filtered/purified water then top it off with organic Rosewater and a few drops of Evening Primrose essential oil to create a romantic, delicately sweet Rosewater Mist. Step Up Your Self-Care

Pause from the busyness of modern life and social media with the help of your favorite essential oil. Drop some in a diffuser and let the scent waft through the air while visions of orange blossoms and lemon groves, bushels of geranium and baskets of roses dance in your head.

Dab a small drop of essential oil directly onto your wrists, whilst sitting in a comfortable position with a straight, elongated spine. Gently rub your wrists together, with palms facing each other, letting the scent drift upward. Inhale. Then bring them up to your nostrils and inhale again, deeply, closing your eyes to allow the scent to ignite your soul. In this posture, bring your hands together, palm to palm, down to your heart center and then take a few more deep, cleansing breaths. Repeat for a few minutes with the essential oil that moves you.

Or simply place a few drops on a tissue and place inside a pillow to promote rest and relaxation.

Breakfast in Bed

Aaah February, the wonderful month where we get a day to celebrate love. It’s the perfect time to highlight the mighty muse, after all, in the words of an 18th century English poet, “it’s love that makes the world go round.” Today, regardless of relationship status, Valentine’s Day provides us with a holiday to show love not only to that special someone, but to our family, and to ourselves. It lets us demonstrate our appreciation for the love that is all around us, thereby letting us experience love’s special sweetness.

So why not try to make that last beyond Valentine’s Day?

Throughout this month and beyond (not just on the 14th), let’s celebrate and spread the love. Here’s a quick guide with 5 simple steps to claiming the whole month of February as your ‘Month of Love.” With some practice, it’s a habit that could last the whole year!

Show Gratitude

Gratitude is a recurring theme for good reason; it comes up in self-care , in spirituality, and quite frankly in the everyday if one is mindful. It stands to reason when talking about love that gratitude follows. Everyone loves to be loved. So why not express your gratitude to your partner, your loved ones, and even to yourself? When you do, you create the fertile ground from which the flowers of love can grow.

Those flowers can take the literal form of a dozen roses, but can also be as simple as taking the time to think about the special people in your life and what you love about them the most. Be awash in love by finding a heart-opening crystal that “speaks to you,” keep it on hand. A rose quartz, for example, can be your official stone of your “Month of Love.” Add a loving mantra to your meditation practice; wake up (in all of February) and raise the energy of your love. Begin by closing your eyes, relax your muscles, and after taking a few deep breaths, repeat the phrase, “May I be surrounded by love.” Then direct this wish to someone you love before offering it up to the universe.

Let those feelings spark your senses, let them resonate, let them move you, and feel the overflowing of love that emanates from your environment. Love is all around.

Find Love Within

No matter how much we love others, no matter where we look to find the love in the world around us, the greatest love of all lies within. Self love is arguably the most important love that there is, and you don’t need to wait — you can love yourself today, on Valentine’s Day, and every day. Be in LOVE.

6 Ways to Practice Self-Care

Now that the holidays and all that partying are past us, we are making time for the things that help us to reflect and to focus. A new year means a new start: a reset before the reminders, notifications and alarms go off. Then it’s off we go — consumed by sending messages, hooked on browsing the internet, keeping up with social media, absorbing the 24 hour news cycle. All of this might happen before and/or after juggling the demands of work and family. Welcome to modern life.

A recent study has found we are spending too much time on our devices. No one need tell us that we are hyperconnected. We all feel that sense of constant urgency of the 24/7 lives we lead. We do a lot but at what price? With the ever-increasing speed of daily life we forget to disengage, take the time in our day for a little quiet to replenish the well, so to speak. Self-care is a large part of what’s missing in the lives of people who are very busy and stressed.

There’s been a lot of talk about the benefits of self-care. What is it? In essence, self-care is the mindful taking of time to pay attention to you — not in a narcissistic way, but in a way that’s protective of your own well-being. What does self-care look like? Here are six simple ways to put self-care into practice on a daily, or at the least, a weekly basis that goes a long way to managing stress and, most importantly, to living your best life.

Know Thyself

Since ancient times philosophers understood the importance of “knowing thyself.” Today that means not only getting to know who you are, but also knowing your limitations. Why? So that you can recognize the moment you are doing too much. Knowing when to slow down is imperative when we are so often running full steam. To figure out your limits is a welcome shift as it helps to shed patterns that don’t serve you and allows you to concentrate on positive, healthy choices. Clearing the way for good habits creates clarity in mind and body, elevating you to a higher, more peaceful state.

Decompress

Morning meditation or a bedtime ritual are wonderful tools for self-care. But decompressing is not just for the beginning and end of day. Don’t wait. Throughout your day, every day, take the time to catch your breath, reset your mind. Be still. The mind needs to rest and have periods of calm. Putting this into practice is not always easy, but the art of disconnecting is essential for living a more mindful life. Taking the time to integrate small/mini breaks helps to refresh your mind and your body, too. Take a brief walk, make a cup of tea, breathe deeply, and/or visualize loved ones, a special memory, a favorite place… These are the pauses the brain and the spirit need.

Find Your Pleasure

Identify what you enjoy to do. Figure out what’s fun for you and integrate it into your day or at least your week. Make it a habit to do or plan something that gives you pleasure that you look forward to. It can be as simple as buying weekly flowers on a Friday as a reward for a week well lived and enjoying their presence in your home. Consistency matters. What we do every day counts more than what we do only once in a while. Make sure to carve out some “happy” space in your life.

Feed Your Spirit

Self-care means finding out what feeds your spiritual self. The good news: there’s no wrong answer! It is whatever feels right and inspires you. Stand in the sunlight, sit like Buddha, honor the rhythms of Mother Nature. Whether it’s meditation or prayer, making spirituality a priority, no matter how busy you are, awakens inner vibrations and peacefulness. It lets you discover wisdom and compassion; it’ll focus your mind, open your heart and sometimes surprise you with insight. Making space in your life for your own personal spirituality beautifully imbues the day-to-day with the sacred and profound.

Gratitude

A great consequence of feeding one’s spirit is the inevitable direction the spiritual path takes towards giving thanks. When we give thanks for all we have, we open the floodgates of connection to ourselves, and to others. The practice of gratitude every single day teaches us to love what we already have. And when we do that, something magical happens: we find that there’s more to come and then some.
