We asked our experienced aestheticians for the absolute essential rules everyone should follow when it comes to skin care. Learn and benefit from their wisdom! All products mentioned below are available in our Spa Boutique.
Wash your face at least once a day with a gentle cleanser & luke warm water. Too hot or too cold water temperatures can aggravate the skin and cause unwanted redness. Bar soap interferes with your skin’s ability to produce natural oils to keep the skin hydrated naturally. So stick with a cleanser that is creamy or milky and use it with luke warm water — this will keep skin calm while still removing dirt and makeup. We recommend SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser.
If you wash your face only once, do it at night! The skin heals at night, so treat it to a makeup free face that can breath.
Never over-exfoliate. Too much exfoliation can strip the skin’s natural barriers and over sensitize, leading to fragile, irritated skin.
Don’t forget to tone! Toning restores your skin’s ph and also takes away any remaining dirt and oil that can clog pores and lead to blackheads and breakouts. This is an important step that is often overlooked.
Feed your skin with serums! In addition to a quality moisturizer, a serum rich in potent antioxidants can pdenetrate deeper into the skin than a lotion and deliver a higher concentration of active ingredients. SkinCeuticals has a great line of highly effective serums.
Moisturize your face. This is a must for any skin type, including oily skin. When a moisturizer isn’t used on oily skin the oil glands overcompensate for the lack of moisture by producing more oil. Well hydrated skin is key to fighting fine lines and wrinkles.
Don’t stop at the chin! The skin on the neck and decolletage area need some TLC as well. Continue the steps right down to the breast bone. Trust us, it’s well worth the extra effort.
In fact, moisturize your whole body. By doing this, you will strengthen your skin’s barrier along with keeping bacteria and viruses out of the body. Applying right after the shower locks in the moisture best. Try Envrion A, C & E Body Oil, or Envrion Derma Lac Lotion.
Avoid products with alcohol. Especially toners, so check the labels, because alcohol can really irritate the skin.
Incorporate vitamins into your skin care regimen. Vitamin A and C are top free-radical fighters and anti-aging ingredients found in skin care products today. These vitamins protect your skin from pollutants and slow the aging process down while benefiting the appearance with a brighter, tighter more youthful looking skin. We like Environ’s AVST Line.
Use sunscreen everyday, all year round. And remember to re-apply when exposed for longer periods of time. The sun is one of the biggest contributors to premature aging of the skin. One of our favorites is MD Solar Science Tinted Mineral Cream.
Drink even more water. Double your water intake and in about 6 weeks you’ll see it reflected in your skin.

Our wonderful nail technician Kelly Ann shows you exactly how to recreate a Haven Signature Manicure at home.
Step 1: Add oil to your cuticles and massage in gently. You can use purpose-made cuticle oil, or any oil you have handy, including olive oil!
Step 2: While the cuticle oil soaks in, file your nails to your desired shape with the fine side of an emery board.
Step 3: Gently smooth the edges of your nail at an angle with a buffer or the fine side of an emery board. You can buffer the top of the nail too if you’d like, just be sure to be very gentle — you don’t want to over-buff.
Step 4: Gently push back cuticles with a cuticle pusher or an orange wood stick. Though it’s tricky and a little risky, you can trim any excess skin very delicately with small cosmetic scissors or cuticle nippers — but please use restraint.
Step 5: Clean under nails with cuticle pusher and then remove any excess oil with a cotton pad, a cotton ball, or a tissue.
Step 6: Prepare the nail for polish by cleaning and dehydrating the nail with rubbing alcohol or nail cleanser (Kelly Ann prefers rubbing alcohol).
Step 7: Apply one layer of clear base coat to the entire nail, making sure to get the edges too.
Step 8: Add a layer of color polish, leaving a little space between the polish and skin – that helps it look neater and last longer.
Step 9: Use the cuticle pusher to remove any polish that gets on skin as you go — wiping off on a nearby paper towel.Don’t use too much polish — you want a thin and even coat.
Step 10: Allow each coat to fully dry before moving on to the next coat. The nail polish you have at home may not dry as quickly as Haven Spa polish dries, so take your time — watch a movie or listen to a podcast and relax in between coats! Step 11: Once the first coat is fully dry, add a second coat of color.
Step 12: Once the second coat is fully dry, ad a generous layer of clear top coat, making sure to seal the edges.
Step 13: Let your nails dry for a full 30 minutes — 15 minutes at a minimum — before you go about your day.

Now that you can’t enjoy regular professional manicures during this time of social distancing, it’s important to maintain the health and integrity of your nails at home on your own. Here are some insider tips from our top nail technicians.
Keeping your cuticles hydrated is the most important way to keep them soft, prevent overgrowth, and prevent hang nails. Applying oil at least once a day works wonders on preserving nail and cuticle health overall. Many of our nail technicians recommend putting on hand lotion topped off with cuticle oil every night before bed. Cuticle oil works really well, but you can definitely use other kinds of oils too! We recommend coconut oil or olive oil. Typically the thicker the oil the better. Hair conditioner can also work well in a pinch!
Lightly filing your nails once a week is a good way to preserve the shape and prevent breaking. The most manageable shape is short and rounded. When they’re short they’re less likely to break, and round is usually an easier shape to achieve. Try to keep the edges and sides of your nail smooth to further prevent breaking.
If you usually like to have your ridges smoothed out, lightly go over the entire nail with a buffer about once every other week. Using a buffer is the best option, but if you do not have a buffer, very gently go over the entire nail with the softest file you have. Don’t overdo it though! Keeping the nail and cuticle hydrated is very important to preventing splitting. Applying a clear coat or nail strengthener once a week is a great way to protect the nail and give it strength.
Since most people are home, right now is the perfect time to give your nails a break from polish. It’s important to let the nail breath and allow all the lotions and oils to fully absorb into the nail. If you are finding the polish remover you have at home is not removing your polish, you may need to use pure acetone (available at stores like CVS, which offers online shopping and drive-through windows for safer delivery or pickup).
We look forward to offering you our wide selection of professional manicures and pedicures again soon. Until then, take good care.
As a small local business, we are a family here at Haven Spa — that includes our wonderful clients and our fabulous talented staff, all of whom we’re so grateful for. We’re dedicated to putting our family’s health and wellbeing at the forefront. After all, that’s our founding principle here at Haven.
So after being open continuously for almost twenty years now, we made the difficult decision (prior to the mandate) to temporarily close Haven Spa for several weeks to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. This is obviously a fluid situation, one we are monitoring closely. We will adjust our plans and timeline accordingly, based on the recommendations from our government and the CDC.
We plan to reopen as soon as possible — hopefully in June. Rest assured that we will be taking all necessary precautions and our entire facility will be cleaned and disinfected during the closure.
How can we all stay connected during this challenging time? We at Haven Spa will continue to bring peace and serenity into your lives, at a time when it’s needed more than ever. Here’s what we have planned:
Our Spring Gift Certificate Sale of Hope: For those who can, Online Gift Certificates are a great way to give yourself or someone you care about a treat to look forward to when things calm down, while helping to keep local businesses viable during this period of instability. Regular At-Home Self-Care Advice: Join us on social media — on Instagram @havenrhinebeck or on Facebook at /HavenSpaRhinebeck. We will be updating our feeds regularly with at-home self-care tips and tricks to alleviate stress and improve wellness, like instructions on self- and partner-massage and how to’s for at-home facials. Whether we’re giving advice on feeling good or finding other ways to stay positive through this difficult time, we’re looking forward to connecting with you online via social media and our Spa Blog.
New Spring Products Delivery: Little luxuries can go a long way toward soothing nerves and boosting hope, while helping your friendly neighborhood businesses in the process. During this time of social distancing, we’re offering 10% OFF ON ALL SPA BOUTIQUE PRODUCTS ordered by phone or email so you can still get the benefits of our excellent new spring items while weathering this storm. We will have a Haven Staff team checking emails to email@example.com and answering calls to 845-876-7369.
