The 8 Essentials of Winter Skin Care

Not only is winter the time to employ preventative skin care to protect against the cold, dry elements of the season, it’s also a great time to undo the damage incurred during all your outdoor summer activities! All services and products mentioned here are available to try out and purchase at the Haven Spa Boutique:

  1. Consider Peels & Microderm Abrasion: Whether you opt for a series of peels (lactic peels will lighten sun damage from the summer and help with cell turnover without causing dryness), or microdermabrasion (which will help with texture, clarity and skin renewal), or a combination of both in conjunction with one of our custom medi facials, these treatments will slough away all the damaged skin to reveal a brighter, more even skin tone. It’s a great way to start the cold weather months!
  2. Gently Cleanse: You want to use a gentle daily cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils. SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser does just that: its creamy formula removes excess oils, make-up and other impurities while leaving skin hydrated, soft and refreshed.
  3. Exfoliate: Properly removing dead surface cells will help maintain your spa treatment until your next visit. How often you exfoliate depends on your skin type: 1) Excessively Dry Skin: Lightly massage the skin with something like Astara’s Refining Scrub using a physical exfoliator once a week. 2) Combination Skin: You could use Astara’s Daily Refining Scrub or Green Papaya Mask 1 to 2 times per week.  3) Oily Skin: Using SkinCeuticals Hydrating B-5 Gel daily would be perfect.
  4. Hydrate from Within: Drink plenty of water and eat foods rich in omega -3 fatty acids which are responsible for keeping skin well lubricated and giving skin a glowing appearance.
  5. Add Oils to Your Every Day Regimen: Nourishing topical oils are good for protection and hydration. Jojoba, coconut, Vitamin A and Vitamin C oils are all good choices. One of our favorite blends for dehydrated winter skin is Mu Face Oil. Apply it after exfoliation, before your moisturizer.
  6. Moisturize Moisturize Moisturize:
After exfoliating, an emollient, rich, free-radical-fighting moisturizer is best for protecting skin from the harsh elements of winter. Be sure to use one in both the AM and PM. Some of our favorites are the Triple Lipid Restore from SkinCeuticals, the MU Moisturizing Complex, and either the rich Radiance Renewal or the lighter Antioxidant Moisturizer, both from Astara.
  7. Avoid Super Hot Showers: They can strip the skin of its natural oils.
  8. SPF It Up: Don’t forget, the sun still shines in winter! So wearing a sunblock is a must, especially during outdoor winter activities like skiing and sledding!

All of these winter skincare essentials and more are available at our Spa Boutique in Rhinebeck. Stop in any time or give us a call about any of the lines we carry!

5 Fun Ways to Make the Freezing Cold Fashionable

It’s going to be a long, cold winter — here’s how to look good getting through it! You can find all of these items in our Haven Boutique at the spa, whether as a gift for yourself or a fashionable friend:

hat1. Invest in a fabulous hat. Your first instinct in the winter is to splurge on a pair of boots or a coat, while your noggin often gets short shrift. But that’s the first thing people notice about you! So rather than rely on your jacket’s hood, take the time to find something you really love. After all, you’ll be living in it for at least the next two months! Haven’s got a great selection of stylish hats, including this series of flower bucket ones shown here (only $24!).

shawls2. Become a layering pro. Not only will it keep you warm in the cold months to come, but it will keep you on trend! Your personality is multi-layered — your wardrobe should be too this season! In our Spa Boutique, we’re featuring a luxurious line of fur-trimmed infinity scarves (shown here) which can double as shawls ($106). So don’t get caught chilly, whether you’re indoors or out!

scarf3. Experiment with scarves. Scarves can be worn in many more ways than simply wrapped around your neck, and winter is the perfect time to experiment. We love the retro look of a scarf tied around your headbelted on top of a jacket, or even tied in a knot around your shoulders. This season, we’re carrying a wide selection of soft scarves to help you do that, including this cozy maroon one from Honore in Paris ($55).

furvest4. Embrace fur or faux fur. One of the few fashion benefits of really cold weather is the chance to wear fur — or faux fur, of course. You can wear it with just about anything to give your outfit an instant upgrade: invest in a statement fur topper, throw on a fur vest like the show-stopping rabbit-fur one we’re featuring in our Boutique (shown here), put a fur stole over your winter coat to give it some new life, or find cool accent pieces like fur collars or even fur mittens to give your winter outfits instant glam.

handwarmers5. Try handwarmers. You’re on the go this season, dashing through the snow, in and out of doors — you want to stay warm but you need quick access to your keys, your lipstick, your keyboard, your phone…  As long as your day plans don’t include a snowball fight, fingerless gloves are fashionable way to stay cozy without giving up convenience. We’ve got a whole bowl in our Spa Boutique filled with Nirvana Knit Handwarmers (pictured here) in various colors and textures ($35).

Stop by our Spa Boutique anytime to run your hands over all these soft and cozy cold-weather accessories — they make great gifts for yourself or loved ones! And if you can’t make it in, just purchase an online gift certificate for the appropriate amount and make your product suggestion to your gift-recipient in the personalized note field.
